A Journey Through Burning Man’s Soul
Burning Man is an annual festival held in the Black Rock Desert, an inhospitable dusty desert plain located two hours northeast of Reno. For the duration of one week, a city of 75,000 people pops up in the desert, all built around the radical idea of a "gifting economy". No money is allowed to make transactions (unless to buy ice), and participants must bring their own food, shelter, and potable water to drink. From this harsh desert climate and this unique set of restrictions, a radically unique society and city is born.
Below is a collection of some of my favorite photographs from Burning Man 2024. Photographing Burning Man was one of the most environmentally challenging, yet unique experiences I have ever done. The harsh alkali dust ruins electronics, and care must be taken to make sure one's camera does not corrode. Due to the ephemeral nature of Burning Man, every image captured on camera is decidedly unique. Once the week ends and the city vanishes back into the dust, that year's iteration of Burning Man disappears- never to appear again.
